Last week I received the Rustic Planks/Red Collapsible Backdrop by Savage Universal. This is from the new Grunge Classics collection of Collapsible Backdrops. I own several of these drops and have become a fan due to the ease of setup, collapsibility and their effectiveness for use them in small spaces. It is also super awesome that they are reversible so you are able to get a wider variety of images with one drop!
While I have a studio full of backdrops I have yet to own a true red drop so I was excited to see how I liked photographing on such a brilliant red. I was initially a little nervous to see how it would turn out but decided to go all out and photograph both a corporate headshot and a senior on the red side of the backdrop.
For the corporate headshot I used a male who is a few years out of college. Many recent grads are in need of headshots as they move into the working world so I thought he would be a perfect subject. Furthermore, I thought a young professional would be more willing to try out a more dramatic color that would make a bolder statement than perhaps an older gentleman that has had his picture taken frequently over the years and is more likely to select grey or blue. Much to my satisfaction I did not find the color to be overpowering but instead very rich and complementary. It looked great with my models dark features and grey suit and resulted in a very classic portrait with a tinge of an edge.
For the images of the senior girl I decided to go for a very classic image. I asked her to wear a white dress with red lipstick. The background was perfect for this timeless image and the backdrop really complemented her skin tones. It would be an excellent shot for a yearbook portrait or a traditional portrait for on the mantle.
I decided to photograph the same senior girl on the Rustic Plank side of my new collapsible backdrop. I asked her to dress in a cozy style as she might at a cabin up in the Wisconsin Northwoods. She brought a green blanket scarf and red long sleeve shirt.
The Rustic Planks backdrop is very warm and has a reddish undertone. This really brought out the natural highlights in my subjects hair and created a very cozy series of images. I also laid the backdrop as a floor drop and photographed my subject from above. I could see this backdrop working well for not only seniors but also toddlers, newborns and even pets. I would very much recommend this setup for portraits and ¾ length shots especially when the shooting space is in tight quarters! I look forward to collecting more of these collapsible drops!
