Richard Waine

Richard Waine was born and raised in Queens, New York at a time when shag carpeting was still in style. After Graduating from Hofstra University he spent the better part of his career in the financial world, working long stressful days on Wall Street. After seeing a YouTube video of Peter Hurley, he dove into headshot photography. In awe of Hurley's energy, knowledge and personality, Richard made the commitment to pursue headshots as his specialty. After meeting Peter and spending time with him at an industry conference, Richard was confident that this was his calling. Peter wasn't so sure. Today, he is proud to be a mentor in Peter Hurley’s Headshot Crew, and is prouder still to call Peter a friend and his mentor.

"Fun Fact: I tend to wear a hat most of the time. Besides being follically challenged (as much as I hate to admit it, I'm losing my hair), my infatuation with hats began when I was around 8 years old. I needed stitches on the bridge of my nose. The plastic surgeon wanted to ensure that any scarring was as minimal as possible. So, he insisted I wear a hat to keep the sun from my face. I never dropped the habit. Today, my collection of hats is pretty large even though I typically only wear one or two."

Shooting on White Backdrops and Staying Away from Flaresville

When I first started photographing headshots, one of the most difficult things to master, aside from coaching and directing my clients, was lighting the background. I know that this sounds like an easy task. You just throw up a light or two, crank the juice and the background is magically lit. If only it was this easy! That is a one-way ticket to Flaresville, and you definitely don’t want to go there.
